LOOK: Violet hair + Makeup Look of the Night (FOTD)

Exactly a week ago, I had my hair highlighted violet (or purple) with Heidi A. at Michelangelo Hair House in Woodland Hills. Since she had cut it, about a month ago, I’d been thinking of changing my ombre-esque hair color. I’m so glad I did it and will be keeping this color for as long as I can stand everything that I touch being stained purple. It’s as bad (and annoying in the beginning) as it sounds, but it’s worth it!

This is what my process looked like…

Before
Bye bye two-tone!

Full head of highlights first, then the violet dye went on top. The color used was Pravana ChromaSilk VIVIDS in Violet.

 After
Clockwise from the top:
In natural light indoors. The color is very discreet, which I love. Sometimes you can’t even tell it’s violet.
Florescent lighting indoors with no flash. The color looks more blue in this setting.
Florescent lighting indoors with flash. Looks even more blue. I love it, two colors in one!
iPhone flash indoors. Here it looks purple, which is what it looks like outdoors in natural light.

A Closer Look
I opted for highlights rather than a solid tint to allow the color to have dimension. Base color is my natural hair color, black-brown.

FOTD/Look of the Night
Simple on the eye and bold on the lip.
Eyes:
Lined my upper water line and inner corners with Sephora Kohl Waterproof Eyeliner in Keep Black
DiorShow Mascara in Rick Black 90 layered with Urban Decay Lush Lash Mascara
Just on the tips of my lashes I added Sephora Long-Lasting Eye Liner in Matte Bright Azure Blue
Lips:
MUFE Aqua Lipliner in 18C (completely filled in my lips with this)
MAC Lipstick in Cut A Caper (Lustre)
Cheeks:
E.L.F Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder

The difference between Refresher, Setting and Finishing Sprays

There can be lots of confusion as to the difference between these three sprays and their uses. Is it just another way for cosmetic companies to trick us into purchasing another product, or are they really useful in their own right?

Refresher Sprays

Pure natural Evian mineral water
propelled by nitrogen

Refresher sprays are usually water based and may or may not be infused with vitamins or minerals. A refresher spray can be used to give the skin hydration before makeup application or throughout the day if needed. These types of sprays are good to be used if you don’t have access to clean water, to dampen your sponge or cake makeup, or just to cool down your face during hot temperatures. It is nothing more than a drink of water for your face. On that note, hydrating your skin and body is one of the most important things you can do.

 Setting Sprays
Part-toner, part-serum mist of essential
oils and plant active ingredients.
Setting sprays are usually some form of purified water with botanical extracts and oils. These types of sprays can be used to set makeup, as they are a mix of oil and water, so when you spritz them on a powdered face the oil will diffuse the micro-spheres of power, giving the face a more “settled in” look. A setting spray is used to avoid the cake face look and make it seem like the makeup is more like your skin rather than a mask. The terms “set”, “fix” and “finish” are often a misnomer on cosmetic packaging. A setting spray will not “fix” your makeup in place. It won’t particularly prolong the wear of your makeup, but it will help the products on the face marry together nicely. You can also use this product without makeup, just spray on before moisturizer.

Finishing Sprays
To seal makeup for freshness and durability

I often refer to to finishing sprays as ‘hairspray for the face’. It is the last product applied to the face and it’s function is to seal everything into place. Perfect for weddings, hot weather, or occasions when you know your makeup will have to last a long time. Often, these sprays are also used to control perspiration on the face or body, so that the makeup won’t melt off. Clowns live by this stuff. Since the formula of finishing sprays can feel a bit heavier than refresher or setting sprays, because they are usually alcohol based, I like to spritz some on a duo fiber brush first then gently pat it onto the face.

I’m back + new website!

I’ve been gone for too long. I haven’t posted in a little over 3 months but I did revamp the look of the blog and I love it! I have been so busy the past few months with my new job, focusing on my freelance career and just things that pop up in life, that I’ve neglected the blog. But I do have a lot of things to share so I’m excited to get those posts up.

First is my new website. This took a lot of hard work and trail and error to get right but it’s finally here! I’m using this awesome host called portfoliobox.net. It takes a minute to learn how all the elements work but once you’ve got it, it’s very simple and user friendly. I highly recommend using their service if you need a place online to host a portfolio. I’m also waiting for matching business cards to arrive, which I ordered from gotprint.net. Designing my business card exactly as I wanted it was a little tricky but their customer service is helpful and their prices are very decent, so I gave it a shot. I hope once I get the cards they are what I expect.

Crazy day! Managed to snap a few pictures. Awesome artists + crew. IMATS LA 2013 now in January - only 7 months away!

EDC Las Vegas 2012

Round two of EDC Vegas. Only went for the first night this time and it was SO crowded at/around the Speedway that it took my friend and I, and a couple of festival goers we picked up along the way, 3 hours!!! to get there. Bigger is not always better. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll return next year. I will be setting out on other new adventures! Did you go? What was your experience like?

Missed more than half of the people on my “must see” list :(

The aftermath. Felt bad for whoever had to clean that.

Behind the Scenes: Assiting Tai Young on set with John Digweed

I recently had the chance to assist celebrity makeup artist Tai Young on set at MILK Studios in Hollywood. She is so talented and great to work with. Makeup on the models was done by her and I had the opportunity to work on the man himself :) Gotta love men’s grooming! That was a fun day!

I got to do John’s makeup/grooming! This was the last shot of the day.

Cheeta Trend Tips manicure

This was my first time trying out the sticker polish trend, and I have to say I’m very happy with the results!
I used Sephora by OPI Trend Tips real lacquer strips in the Cheetah Sparkle design. I used a base coat (by OPI) and a top coat (Seche Vite) as well.

Also tried for the first time, the Soothing Skin, Lip and Cuticle Care by Murad. This stuff is the most amazing cuticle treatment I’ve ever used! It conditions as well as exfoliates. My nails have never looked this good when I’ve done my own manicure. And they still look as good now. This will probably work wonder for dry or chapped lips.

What do you think?
